In Georgia, do you have to have a learners permit before getting liscence at age 17?

I've heard once your 17 you can jus go get your liscence without having a permit.

The permit is the licence to learn. It is the licence to be behind the wheel. You cannot take your behind-the-wheel driver test without your permit.

"I heard" is a lousy source of information, about on a par with "they say".

There is only one state that has gone backwards and now issues no permit, and that is New Hampshire.

As of January 1, 2007, all teen drivers will be required to complete an approved driving education course before applying for your regular Class D driver license.

If you are under the age of 18 and not enrolled in school, you'll also need to provide a copy of your GED, or an attendance form from your county's Board of Education stating you are enrolled in an approved home school. If you withdraw from school before you graduate, have more than 10 unexcused absenses, or reports of misconduct, you cannot apply for a learner's permit or keep one if you already have it.
