Is it possible to make an s10 have 2 engines and be able to switch from one to the other? 2nd one in the bed?

for example keep the 4.3 in the engine bay but have a small 4 cylinder in the bed and be able to switch to the small engine for mpg and have the power when you need it?

Anything is possible given enough money and a well equipped shop, but I'd be hard pressed to figure out how to send the output of the engine in the bed into the transmission, not to mention the linkage you'd need to control the throttle.
